West Nile virus is the leading mosquito-borne disease in the continental U.S., primarily spread by mosquitoes that feed on infected birds, with human risk peaking from mid to late August. While most people bitten by infected mosquitoes show no symptoms, about 25% experience mild symptoms like fever or rash, and around 1% may develop severe neurological complications such as meningitis or paralysis. Elderly individuals and those with underlying health conditions are particularly at risk.
